National Review Flashback

George H.W. Bush is a Pit Bull!

I still have the issue just to remind me the value of endoresments:

"My Pit Bull, George"  November 6, 1987 edition of National Review.

The synopsis eerily states "George Bush has been maliciously tagged a wimp, a preppie, a loser and a moderate. The truth is he is thoughtful, articulate, conservative - and a winner. It's time movement conservatives rallied to Bush's side."

History has shown that GHWB was a wimp, a preppie, a loser and a moderate. In 2007 National Review now wants "movement conservatives" to rally to Romney's side.

Here's a hint... Romney is a wimp, a preppie, a loser and a moderate.

More Defections from Mitt at National Review

Another NR Writer Distances Himself from the Romney Endorsement.

From here (emphasis mine). I'm guessing that Hugh Hewitt won't be covering this story.

Back to the Republicans, or, Not Mitt   [Peter Robinson]

The other day, Jonah put some distance between himself and NR’s endorsement of Mitt Romney. I’d like to do the same. Romney strikes me as impressive, but also as terribly flawed. Over the next couple of days, I’ll do my best to explain.

In the meantime, one observation.

Endorsing Romney, the editors explained that they had decided against Fred Thompson largely because “Thompson has never run any large enterprise.” This brought to mind another Republican candidate—one whose management experience, like that of Fred Thompson, was limited to having served as a partner in a law firm.

Abraham Lincoln.

===========================================

As for me, I'm still supporting Duncan Hunter.

I was a national Review subscriber for years; from around late high school to my first years after college. I canceled some 15 years ago. I should have canceled when the magazine tried to convince me that George Bush (41) was a rock solid conservative. That was laughable as is their shaky endorsement of Mitt.

I STILL Won't Vote For Mitt

Flip-Flopping Empty Suit Cannot Change Pro-Abortion Record

I declared in a blog entry last February that I will not vote for Mitt Romney. I'm sticking with that conviction.

Mitt Romney ran as a liberal Republican and governed as a liberal Republican in Massachusetts. From his goofy TV interview with his wife draped across his chest to his canned answers in the debates, he's painfully disingenuous.

Mitt was Planned Parenthood's's best friend in Massachusetts (see my blog entry below for the details).

Romney is an empty suit who has misrepresented his faith repeatedly. No, we're not electing a "Pastor in Chief" but that doesn't mean that he has to be deceptive about his faith (and his pro-Abortion record). Michael Medved is an orthodox Jew. I would gladly vote for him. He doesn't have to lie about his faith to get my vote. Mitt can't be honest about his faith because he can't be honest about much.

Save all the "bigot" emails. That's the first resort of those without a defense. Romney is a lying liberal Republican who is seeking a nomination outside of Massachusetts. It has been argued that he had to run from the left in order to win in Massachusetts, but that doesn't mean that he had to govern from there.

It's a Weak Field

In a field with so few genuine conservatives, I am stunned that Duncan Hunter can't get traction. After the other 2% and I cast our votes for Hunter and he has to drop out, I'm left without a candidate. The field is so weak, Ron Paul is starting to look like a good alternative!

The Golden Compass Scare Passes

Christians Get Excited Over Nothing... Again

"There's nothing an agnostic can't do if he doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not."
- Graham Chapman (in a skit from Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album)

In a recent story about the upcoming release of the movie "The Golden Compass," Philip Pullman, author of the book upon which the movie is based, is referred to as a "confirmed agnostic." I have no idea what that means. I guess he's absolutely certain that he's not sure about that which he is not absolutely certain.

To be fair to Mr. Pullman, I cannot say that he has ever described himself that way.

What is more intriguing to me concerning about this film is the apparent war being waged by the Catholic League. In a fight between agnostics and the Catholic Church I must say that I'm no sure that I wouldn't be rooting for the agnostics.

Atheism and agnosticism have never held sway over large groups of people. Certainly they have done their damage (see: Communism). But what's worse, a group that states that it just doesn't believe in the God of the Bible or a group that claims that it has sole access to the God of the Bible?

I'm not denouncing or supporting the film. I have no interest in the theories of agnostics or atheists. I only hope that the silly emails from my Christian friends warning me about this film will soon stop. Good grief, the Catholic Church teaches that it is the sole ark of safety and in it alone are found the graces necessary for salvation and Christians are worried about agnostics?

Satan presents himself as an "Angel of Light" and his ministers are "the ministers of righteousness." To top that off he has "false apostles" who preach "another Jesus." There was a movie out not long ago that was more dangerous to Christianity than "The Golden Compass"... it was "The Passion of the Christ,"

For the theological record, agnostics (Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Animists, Rastafarians, atheists, you name it) can achieve salvation by being good neighbors according to the Catholic Church. Of course, they're saved by the Catholic Church... they just don't know it. Lucky them, they don't have to observe all the rules... for you Catholics, if YOU miss mass on a "Holy Day of Obligation" without approval from your church, you just bought a mortal sin and a ticket to eternal torment.

According to one wildly popular Catholic author (with the imprimatur of several leading evangelicals), Mohammad is in heaven as a "Crypto-Christian." The only emails I received about that book were endorsements.

I don't make the rules, I just quote 'em. Atheists, "Confirmed Agnostics" and Animists are all free to believe what they will. Ain't this a great country? I know what I believe and no silly, half-baked movie is gonna change that. The same goes for gross misrepresentations like the dismal "The Passion of the Christ."

UPDATE: Whew! The Golden Compass opened to mild reviews and disappointing box office figures. Reminds me of The DaVinci Code "scare." Time to drop the fanaticism and get back to more important matters.

How Dare She Point Out Romney Facts!

Romney Was Abortion's Best Friend in MA...

Kathryn Jean Lopez notes the facts as presented by the Thompson campaign.

She must be a bigot.

When asked if he believed if a child in the womb is indeed a child, Mitt responded "I've already answered that question. Please refer to my campaign staff for clarification."

Romney - $50 Abortions in Massachusetts

Romney claims to be pro-life. But under his health care plan, Massachusetts residents now have access to taxpayer-funded abortions for $50.

Romney's Health Care Plan:

Provides Taxpayer-Funded Abortions. Abortions are covered in the Commonwealth Care program that Romney created as Governor. Under the program, abortions are available for a copay of $50. (Menu of Health Care Services: http://www.mass.gov/Qhic/docs/cc_benefits1220_pt234.pdf)

Guarantees Planned Parenthood A Seat At The Table. Romney's legislation created an advisory board and guarantees, by law, that Planned Parenthood has a seat at the table. Romney's plan established a MassHealth payment policy advisory board, and one member of the Board must be from Planned Parenthood. No pro-life organization is represented. (Chapter 58 Section 3 (q) Section 16M (a), http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/seslaw06/sl060058.htm)

Romney used his line-item veto authority to strike eight sections of the bill that he found objectionable, including the expansion of dental benefits to Medicaid recipients. Yet, he did not strike Planned Parenthood's guaranteed Board representation and he did nothing to prohibit taxpayer-funded abortions as part of his plan. ("Romney's Health Care Vetoes," Associated Press, 4/12/06)

UPDATE: Dick Morris adds...

"Romney is taking flack for his flip-flop-flip over abortion. Voters know that his statement that he changed his mind to become pro-life is belied by the fact that he had changed it before to become pro-choice when he decided to run in Massachusetts. His unreliability on this issue combines with his pro-gay rights comments during his Senate race against Ted Kennedy to raise doubts about him on the right."

Apparently Dick Morris is a also a bigot.
